참여형 문화예술활동의 유형 및 사회적 기능 분석 = 성남시 문화클럽의 사례를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 문화예술이 ‘함께하는 삶’에 긍정적으로 기여하는 기제와 과정을 참여형 문화예술 활동, 그중에서도 성남시의 문화클럽이라는 사례를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 일반적으로 부르디외의 문화자본론은 예술이 가져오는 구별과 불평등을 강조하며 퍼트넘의 사회자본론은 공동체적 활동이 가져오는 유대와 신뢰를 강조한다. 그러나 본 논문은 문화자본과 사회자본이 동시에 활성화할 수 있는 가능성을 전제하고 이러한 전제하에서 문화클럽의 유형을 분류하고, 이러한 유형이 나타나고 유지되는 경험적 기제와 과정에 대한 분석을 실시하였다. 성남시 문화클럽 중에 가장 많은 비중을 차지하고 가장 활동적인 클럽은 ‘만능형’ 문화클럽이었다. ‘만능형’ 문화클럽은 문화자본과 사회자본이 동시에 활성화되어 있는 가장 바람직한 클럽이었다. 그러나 예술을 핑계로 친목도모에 치중하는 ‘사교형’ 문화클럽도 두 번째로 많았다. 그 외에 예술적 관심에 치중하며 다른 사회자본적 관심에는 무관심한 ‘자기계발형’과 예술을 도구로 삼아 사회적 연계에 치중하는 ‘문화외교형’ 클럽도 적지 않다. 이들 클럽의 문화자본과 사회자본의 결합 양상과 상관관계를 맺는 변수는 ‘클럽 형성 계기’와 ‘활동 거점’이었다. 특히 직장에서 생긴 클럽의 경우 사회자본이 약하게 나타났으며 문화센터 같은 기관과 오프라인에서 자발적으로 모임이 만들어진 경우는 사회자본과 문화자본이 모두 활성화되어 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 양상은 또한 활동 거점에 따라 다르게 나타났다. 특히 성남 전체에서 활동하는 문화클럽에서는 문화자본과 사회자본이 동시에 활성화된 ‘만능형’이 가장 두드러지게 나타났으며 어떤 특정 계기에 국한되지 않고 다양한 계기를 통해 형성되었음이 확인됐다. 이를 통해해 우리는 문화자본과 사회자본이 결합하는 양상이 다양함을, 그리고 이 다양성이 ‘어디서 형성됐는가’와 ‘어디서 활동하는가’, 그리고 ‘어디서 형성되어 어디서 활동하는가’와 관계가 있음을 확인했다. 비록 잠정적이고 불완전한 경험적 사례분석에 머물지만 본 논문의 발견은 일반인들의 참여적인 문화예술 활동이 개인주의적 취미활동에 머물지 않고 사회 구성원들의 집합적 복지와 유대에 긍정적으로 기여할 수 있게 되는 기제와 과정을 이해하는 데 이론적으로뿐만 아니라 정책적 관점에서도 중요한 시사점을 제공해줄 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper investigates the mechanism and processes by which artistic activities contribute to “living together” especially by looking at the case of Seongnam city’s culture clubs. Bourdieu’s concept of cultural capital focuses on distinction and inequality caused by arts whereas Putnam’s concept of social capital on ties and trust caused by communal life. This paper assumes the possibility where cultural capital and social capital coexist in a positive manner. This paper categorizes types of culture clubs according to the patterns of combination between cultural capital and social capital and examines the mechanism and processes with which the different patterns of combination are associated. The most active and frequent case is “all-purpose type” club where cultural and social capitals are positively associated indicating that cultural and social capitals are not necessarily incompatible with each other. However, the second most frequent case is “leisure type” club where members are interested only in internal relationship building by using arts as an excuse, which indicates that cultural and social capitals are not necessarily going with each other. In addition, there are “self improvement type” club focusing only on improving artistic skills without interest in both internal bonding and external connecting and “cultural diplomat type” club using arts as a tool for external connection. The variables that are associated with these types are “how they were formed” and “where they are active”. In the case of clubs formed in the work places have the lowest rate of social capital and in the case of clubs formed in the cultural center and off-line meetings have the high active degree in both social and cultural capitals. In the case of clubs that are active all around the city have the highest rate of “all-purpose type” clubs that are active in both cultural and social capitals. In addition, the origins of these clubs active all around the city were not concentrated on the particular sites. This paper identified diverse patterns of combination between social and cultural capitals and also the fact that the patterns are associated with “how they were formed”, “where they are active”, and “how they were formed” and “where they are active now”. Although this paper is an tentative and imperfect empirical analysis, it provides a useful starting point for the future analysis of the mechanism and processes by which arts contribute to the collective well being and communal life.
