키스 쟈렛(Keith Jarrett)의 음악을 통해 본 현대 재즈의 위상에 대한 고찰 = A Case Study of Contemporary Jazz : Keith Jarrett and His Music

국문 초록 (Abstract)

100여 년 전 미국에서 태동한 재즈는 그동안 상업적, 대중적 측면에서 의미를 가지는 음악장르의 하나로 성장해 왔다. 그럼에도 불구하고 여전히 그 정의나 위상에 대해서는 의견이 분분하다. 가장 큰 이유는 상대적으로 짧은 역사에도 불구하고 다양한 음악 장르와 교류해 오면서 형식적 측면에서 너무나 다양한 스펙트럼을 가져온 것에 있다고 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 현재까지 여전히 음악활동을 하고 있는 키스 쟈렛이라는 재즈 뮤지션의 음악세계를 통해 현대 재즈의 위상에 대한 특징을 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위해 그의 음악적 변천사를 검토하였으며, 가장 큰 특징으로서 그의 즉흥연주와 공간적 확장성에 대해 알아보았다.
키스 쟈렛으로 대표되는 지난 반세기간의 재즈는 현실을 표현해 내고자 하는 뮤지션으로서의 예술적 욕망을 보다 자유롭고 다양한 형식으로 분출하고자 하는 재즈 뮤지션들의 노력이 집적되어 온 것이며, 이러한 다양한 실험적 정신과 실천들은 여전히 진행 중인 것으로 보인다. 또한 단순히 형식적인 측면에서의 변화를 뛰어 넘어, 시장 혹은 연주자 자체의 세계화를 통해 현대 재즈는 새롭게 진화하고 있는 것으로 보인다.

Jazz which was originated in the United States almost 100 years ago, has grown and expanded in terms of commercial and popular aspects. There is, however, a great diversity of opinion howyou define its status. Themain reason could be that it has developed and experienced toomuch wide spectrum as far as its musical forms are concerned, while it has interacted with other genre of music despite relatively short history. This study attempts to verify the features of modern, so called contemporary jazz by investigating the musical perspectives of Keith Jarrett, an eminent figure of jazz who still leads this genrewith great popularity. Changes and transition of hismusical world are reviewed and, his improvisation style and spatial expandability of hismusical practice are particularly examined.
This study argues that contemporary jazz has been formed by accumulating every efforts of jazz musicians such as Keith Jarrett, who have endeavored to express their artistic impulse in a more free and honest way as musicians. Which experimental spirits and practices are still progressing. In addition, besides its formal transition, contemporary jazz has been evolving toward a newstage through geographical globalization ofmusical performers aswell as itsmarket.
