First--the Bible, in its nature, is a light shining in a dark place, the day-spring from on high, visiting our earth. What a world was this before it arose! The shadows of ten thousand midnights could not have made a gloom so horrible. Even the blackness that rested upon ill-fated Egypt, for three days, in an unbroken succession, was light when compared with the irksome obscurity which overshadowed the world with a gloom unpierced by the trembling taper of reason.
