Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium is a major cause of human gastroenteritis. Five Salmonella pathogenicity islands (SPIs) have been characterized in detail for S. typhimurium. The aim of this study was to examine these regions, shown to be crucial in virulence, in pathogenic serotype Typhimurium to identify any major possession that may explain variation in virulence and provide further understanding of the elements involved in the evolution of these regions.
Total strain thirty seven of S. typhimurium were isolated from clinical specimens of diarrhea patients during 2001-2004 in Gwang-ju area, Korea. It was compared by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification using a series of primers that together encompassed the full length of all five SPIs.
All strains were identified in all five SPIs. As time goes on from 2001 to 2004, S. typhimurium has a plenty of large blocks of virulence gene, as S. typhimurium in 2001 compared to S. typhimurium in 2004 together. The distribution of these differences suggests that there have been a number of relatively recent horizontal transfers of genes into strains. It seems that existence sequence are likely to be involved in continuing evolution of the pathogenicity islands of pathogenic S. typhimurium.
