고대 그리스 반지성주의 연구 = A Study on Anti-Intellectualism in Ancient Greece

In his inaugural address, President Yoon Seok-yeol pointed out that antiintellectualism is the cause of various problems in our society and puts democracy into a crisis, and emphasized the need for the recovery of rationalism and intellectualism for the development of democracy. However, anti-intellectualism is not only a negative attitude against the intellect and rationality, but also may be understood as a positive effort to acknowledge the imperfection of the intellect, guard against the arrogant self-righteousness of intellectuals and the hypocrisy of distorted selfishness, and ensure healthy communication of diverse opinions. The ancient Greek epic tradition seems to have regarded divine inspiration and intuition as more credible epistemological grounds than human experience and knowledge. Democracy, which began in Athens at the end of the 6th century BC, created a social atmosphere in which the sound common sense and opinions of the general public were more reliable than the intellectual authority of a small elite group. The rhetoric, which seeks to construct a timely opinion according to the situation and persuade the public rather than search for absolute and universal knowledge, played a major role in creating such an atmosphere.
Greek old comedy also staged accusations of the self-righteous authority, hypocrisy, and incompetence of some intellectuals. As such, the so-called ‘anti-intellectualism’ in ancient Greece had a positive aspect that could not be defined only by negative evaluation, and it can be said that it contributed to the maturation of Athens’ own democracy

국문 초록 (Abstract)

윤석열 대통령은 취임사에서 반지성주의가 민주주의를 위기로 몰아넣고 여러문제를 일으키는 원인이라고 지적하며, 민주주의 발전을 위해 합리주의와 지성주의 회복이 필요하다고 역설했다. 그러나 반지성주의는 지성에서 벗어나고 합리성에 반대하는부정적 태도만 아니라, 지성의 불완전성을 인정하고, 지성인의 독선과 이기적 위선을 경계하고 다양한 의견의 건전한 소통을 보장하려는 긍정적 노력으로 이해될 수도 있다. 고대 그리스 서사시 전통은 인간적 경험과 지식보다는 신적 영감과 직관을 더 믿을 만한인식론적 근거로 여긴 것 같다. 고대 아테네에서 시작된 민주정은 소수 엘리트 집단의지성적 권위보다는 일반 대중의 건전한 상식과 의견이 더 믿을만하다는 사회적 분위기를 조성했다. 절대적·보편적 지식보다는 상황에 따른 시의적절한 의견으로 대중을 설득하는 수사학이 그런 분위기를 조성하는 데 큰 역할을 했다. 또한 그리스 희극은 일부 지성인들의 독선적 권위와 위선과 무능력을 고발했다. 고대 그리스의 이른바 ‘반지성주의’ 는 부정적 평가만으로는 규정될 수 없는 긍정적 측면이 있었으며 아테네 고유의 민주주의를 성숙하게 만드는 데에 기여했다.
