The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) recommended using a representative person concept to defne an individual for reasonable dose assessment of the public. This study assessed the residents’ radiation dose in case of an emergency of research reactor by applying the representative person concept and analyzed the results with those of dose assessments that applied a maximum exposed individual concept, which is refected in the current Korean regulation system.
The source term was set for dose assessment assuming channel fow blockage accident, which is the most severe accident in a research reactor. Radiation dose assessment that applies the representative person concept was conducted. Furthermore, dose assessment that applies the maximum exposed individual concept was conducted. Finally, the results of dose assessment between the representative person and maximum exposed individual were comparatively analyzed. In this study, the radiation dose of the representative person was 5.01 mSv. The radiation dose of the maximum exposed individual was 26.1 mSv. The radiation dose of the representative person was lower by approximately 80.8% than that of the maximum exposed individual.
These results can be used as foundational data to apply the representative person concept in the regulation system in Korea.
