Young Adults
Jeong, Kyung Mi
Master of Art in Christian Education
Graduate School, Seoul Theological University
Family, as the source of human life, provides fundamental base of life that allows one to grow under the protection and care of parents, and eventually carry out the roles as a member of society. In the current manners of the nuclear family, there is little opportunity for learning to be parents, which greatly influences children’s lives. Whilst parental education programs are carried out through children education institutions, preventative approach of parental education is fundamentally required for adequate preparations. In this aspect, this paper was written to propose a parental education program of a preventative aspect to help Christian young adults become successful parents, based on understanding of their current situations and circumstances.
The Christian young adults targeted in this paper refer to
unmarried young adults between the ages of 18 to 29, who attend church regularly, and are involved in young adult ministry group. The educational objectives of this program are for its targets to (1) build self-esteem as God’s loved one (2) learn the ways of living harmoniously in love with the spouse God has given one, (3) learn to raise the child God has gifted one according to God’s will, (4) realize and understand the missional calling to be salt and light of the world as a Christian family.
Pre-parental educational program for Christian young adults comprises one-time preliminary meeting, followed by eleven learning sessions, divided into five stages. The five stages are as follows: Step 1 discusses the formation of a healthy self-identity, step 2 discusses a biblical understanding of the marital relationship, step 3 the biblical understanding of family, step 4 the biblical understanding of parental relationship with child(ren), and step 5 discusses the understanding of correlation with society. As a whole, the program begins with the
individual and branches out to husband and wife, a family comprising the said husband and wife, family expanded with the gift of child, and finally, to society.
Of the twelve learning sessions, the first serves as the orientation to introduce the program and encourage participation. Following orientation, the first three weeks make up Step 1 of the program with the themes of “Discovery of ‘myself’ amidst relationships with parents and family,” “Discovering ‘my’ disposition through the MBTI Personality Test,” and “Understanding of ‘myself’ through human
understanding as shown by the Bible.” During the 4th and 5th week begins step 2, with the themes of “Marriage(Marital relationship) as told by the Bible” and “Figure of my ideal spouse,” while step 3 takes place during weeks 6 and 7 with the themes of “God as the Master of home” and “Child as told by the Bible.”
As step 4, weeks 8 to 10 observes the themes of “Understanding of human development stage,” “Duties of parents as told by the Bible,” and “Bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord,” and the final step 5 in the 11th week is conducted under the theme of “Christian Family within society.”
