버크민스터 풀러의 유기체주의와 디자인 경제성 - 지속가능성의 철학적 배경 및 디자인적 의미

국문 초록 (Abstract)

버크민스터 풀러(R. Buckminster Fuller, 1895-1983)는 20세기 초·중반부터 지속 가능한 건축·디자인을 자신의 이론과 작업으로 실천했다. 그러나 그의 테크노크라시, 미국 군사 조직과의 관계, 1960-70년대에 전개된 근대에 대한 비판적 운동과 다른 행보를 보임으로 인해, 건축·디자인사에서 공식적으로 자리매김 되지 않고 있다. 본 논문은 풀러의 지속가능성 개념의 뿌리인 ‘유기체주의(organicism)’와 ‘적은 것으로 많은 것을 한다(Do More with Less)’는 디자인 경제성의 의미를 당시의 철학 및 과학과의 관계에서 접근한다. 첫째, 풀러의 ‘유기체주의’ 개념이 19세기-20세기 초 미국의 초월주의 자연관과 어떤 영향 관계 속에서 형성되었는지를 살펴봄으로써, 자연에 선험적으로 내재하는 일반 원리의 발견을 유기체주의 디자인의 목적으로 제기하는 맥락을 밝힌다. 둘째, 형태와 구조의 경제적 원리에 대한 풀러의 연구가 자연 과학과 다학제적으로 연계되는 양상을 분석한다. 이를 기반으로, 풀러가 제기한 여러 디자인 개념들(다이맥시온, 시너제틱스 등)과 현재 논의되는 지속가능성, 생태주의, 인류세에 대한 반성 및 비교 분석이 가능해지고, 건축·디자인사에서 풀러의 위치를 명확히 할 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

R. Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983) explored sustainable design approaches and practices in the early and mid-20th century. However, due to his technocratic world-view and a-political position, he has not been officially positioned in architectural or design history. This study examines the conceptual bases of Fuller’s sustainable design: ‘organicism’ and ‘design economy.’ First, the research investigates transcendentalist ideas about nature and its influence on Fuller’s notion of organicism, thereby clarifying that the purpose of organicism is to discover the notion of ‘a priori’ and general principles of nature. Second, this study analyzes Fuller’s experiments with general principles of form and structure and the ways in which they are connected to scientific disciplines. By doing so, this study will provide a field in which to discuss Fuller’s organicism and related concepts (e.g. dymaxion and synergetics) with issues of sustainability, ecology and anthropocentrism. Using these findings, we propose a way to position Fuller in sustainable architecture and design history.
