This study examines the issue of censorship surrounding the film Homeless Angels (1941), released in the latter period of the Japanese occupation of Korea. The news bureau of the Japanese army in colonial Korea and the Ministry of Education of Japan recommended this film for viewing in Japan after censoring it. However, before its release in Japan, the Ministry of Home Affairs removed a considerable part of the filmduring an additional round of censorship, and the original Korean dialogues, which were accompanied with Japanese subtitles, were re-recorded in Japanese. The controversy surrounding the censorship and the withdrawal of the Ministry of Education``s recommendation of the film takes center stage in the academic debate on the film, raising the issue of the (im)possibility of a Korean movie being accepted by the Imperial regime during the colonial era. After comparing the film to the newly discovered scenario, I found that the parts that had been censored most extensively were related to Christianity, for example, scenes of reciting from the Bible and the singing of hymns, where Bang Seongbin``s identity as a pastor is disclosed, when children at Hyangrinwon prayed or read the Bible, and even when a church building appears in the background. The film, due to its Christian content, could not escape cuts during the censorship process despite the fact that its original screenplay and dramatization was by Nishiki Motosada, who had worked for the office of censorship of the Government-General of Korea. These cuts can be attributed to the status and meaning accorded to Christianity in colonial Korea and Imperial Japan. More so, this can be explained when we consider that mainstream Christianity in Japan had become an integral part of Japanese imperial fascism, while the Kagawa Toyohiko faction of Christianity, which was an influence on the film``s actual model, Bang Su-won, had been keeping its distance from imperial fascism. Since the 1930s, Japanese imperialism had strengthened its direct control over the church, as can be seen from a series of incidents repressing communist organizations and Christian uprisings. New religions, communism, and Christianity were subject to state sanctions if found to be in conflict with Japanese imperialism. Furthermore, the film was released right before the outbreak of the Pacific War, when there was a renewed call by the imperial regime for strengthening state control over Christianity. This was the context in whichthe film Homeless Angels was censored.
