This study explores the modern expression of Goeseokdo as its central theme, examining the works exhibited in the Master’s Degree Graduation Exhibition of the Department of Folk Painting at the graduate school of future strategy and gonvergence, Dongduk Women’s University (March 19–25, 2025, Dongduk Art Gallery) from an academic perspective. The researcher primarily focuses on the expression and symbolism of "stone(石)" in traditional paintings from the late Joseon period and aims to present the formative expression and aesthetic value of stone as a pictorial subject. During the Joseon Dynasty, Goeseokdo (怪石圖) was regarded not merely as a depiction of stones but as a complete formative expression symbolizing the order and harmony of nature, recognizing stones as part of the natural world.
The culture of appreciating grotesque stones (怪石) had already been established in the Song Dynasty of China and was considered an essential element of garden culture (wonrim, 園林), serving as viewing stones. In the main text, China's Taihuseok (太湖石) is shown to have developed as the center of a stone appreciation culture due to its porous, bizarre forms and its symbolic association with landscapes. Through historical literature, it can be confirmed that during the late Joseon period, Korea also had a prevailing taste for grotesque stones. As cultural exchanges expanded between Chinese and Joseon literati, and with the influx of Chinese painting manuals from the 18th century onward, specialized painters of Goeseok began to emerge in the 19th century. Through a review of prior studies, the researcher found that Chinese painting manuals were reinterpreted as painting subjects by Joseon literati painters.
Chapter II explores the expressive techniques and characteristics of from the 18th and 19th centuries, tracing its origins in garden culture and the subsequent trend of appreciating grotesquestones. which focus on the expressive nature of grotesque stones in solo Goesokdo and Hwahwe Goeseokdo (flower and grotesque stone paintings) within(literati painting). This chapter also considers influenced by the styles of Chinese painters from the Yangzhou school. It was found that in the 18th and 19th centuries reflected expressions similar to the-style grotesque stonesof Chinese Song Dynasty literati. The chapter also analyzes the expressive characteristics of Goeseokdo by Jeong Hak-gyo, a painter specializing in grotesque stones from the1 8th to the 20th centuries, and compares grotesque stone depictions in court paintings and folk paintings.
Chapter III focuses on creative and interpretive works. Through one piece of traditional colored painting (Goeseok Morando) and are interpretative work (Hwajeopdo) closer to modern transformation, the researcher was able to approach the motif of grotesque stones more intuitively within creative practice.
Chapter IV categorizes the themes and directions of the researcher’s creative work into several types.
    - Type A presents a flat structured installation work featuring stone imagery and grotesque stones in relief.
-Type B explores Hwahwe Goeseokdo using the middle-tone coloring technique and a collaged Goeseok Morando using Korean paper, seeking new visual expressions.
    - Tyle C, titled the Flower Rock Series, incorporates stories and memories from the researcher’s childhood, combining stones with surrounding flowers to complete a harmonious composition.
    - Type D includes installation works, such as a disc made from dakji (traditional Korean paper) and a stone pagoda constructed from Korean paper.
    - Type E consists of works on various themes, from early graduate school projects to those exhibited in the Master’s Graduation Exhibition, showcasing experiments with a range of materials.

Keywords: Goeseokdo, Joseon painting, grotesque stones, Muninhwa, Seokbopung, Korean aesthetics, folk painting, modern reinterpretation.
