Most children with selective mutism show the symptoms of depression, anxiety and withdrawal, and problem behavior such as failure to express themselves.
In this regard, the study was conducted to see the effect of art therapy towards children with selective mutism.
In this study, art therapy targeted children in the third grade of elementary school who met the diagnostic criteria of selective mutism such as DSM-Ⅳ and turned out in need of clinical treatment in the K-CBCL test.
The art therapy program consisted of three steps: the first step to form intimacy and relieve tension, the second step to express desire and increase the self-expression of self-awareness, and the last step to form positive self-concept and improve self-regard by enhancing the ability to express oneself.
The research findings are as follows.
First, art therapy has a positive effect on improvement in the self-expression of children with selective mutism. This is because active linguistic expression has been increased as a result of comparing behavior observation records written before and after the experiment.
Second, art therapy has a positive effect on change in the depression and anxiety of children with selective mutism. Their T score droped by 29 points in depression and anxiety as a result of the pre-post comparison of the K-CBCL.
Third, art therapy has a positive effect on the withdrawal behavior of children with selective mutism. Their T score droped by 21 points in withdrawal as a result of the pre-post comparison of the K-CBCL.
Such research findings show that art therapy to improve self-expression is effective in enhancing the depression, anxiety and withdrawal behavior of children with selective mutism, and that its application to those children is likely to make a greater contribution in the future.
