余华의 『许三观卖血记』에 나타난 반복 서술과 번역양상 고찰 = Narrative Repetition in Korean Translations of “The Tale of Xu Sanguan’s Selling Blood” by Yu Hua

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The repetition of incidents and narrative devices are essential to “The Tale of Xu Sanguan’s Selling Blood.” Words, sentences, and entire paragraphs are repeated, and this repetition has a rhetorical effect that emphasizes certain ideas, illustrates the characters, and expresses their internal states.
This paper analyzes the handling of repetition in the Chinese–Korean translation. Direct translation of repetition preserves the original meaning, and when repetition is omitted in translation, the rhetorical effect is diminished or lost. Few or no repeated paragraphs are omitted in this translation. However, there are many examples of repeated sentences and words that are omitted in the translation. The results of this thesis confirm a fundamental principle: a translator must understand the characteristics of the original work and the writer’s narrative intention.
