역사적 기억의 덧쓰기(palimpsest)에 대한 국면사적 접근 = “용산 전쟁기념관”과 “제주 4.3 평화공원”의 비교

국문 초록 (Abstract)

용산 전쟁기념관과 제주 4.3 평화공원은 비슷한 시기에 서로 연관되어 벌어진 역사적 사건들, 즉 한국전쟁(1950-1953)과 제주 4.3 사건(1948-1953)을 기억한다는 취지로 건립된 곳이다. 이 두 개의 기념관은 상당한 유사성을 보이고 있으면서도 서울과 제주라는 지리적 거리만큼이나 잘 어울리지 않는다. 전쟁기념관과 제주 4.3 평화공원은 역사적 사건에 대한 해석, 기억, 재구성 등에 있어서 어떠한 유사성과 대비를 보이는가? 이러한 유사성과 대비가 공존하는 이유는 무엇인가? 이 연구는 두 기념물이 보이는 유사성과 긴장을 서로 다른 시간성(혹은 역사적 맥락)의 교차라는 개념을 통해 이해하고자 하는 시도이다. 공적기념물에 대한 지금까지의 연구들이 대개 그 기념물이 전하는 “핵심적” 의미를 부각할 수 있는 하나의 역사적 맥락에 집중하였다면 이 연구는 다양한 역사적 맥락에서 이해할 수 있는 다양한 의미를 가진 행위들(practices)이 덧씌워진 공간으로서 공적 기념물에 접근한다는 점에서 차이를 보인다. 이를 통해 공적 기념물이 가지고 있는 내재적 긴장과 비일관성을 당연한 것으로 보고 역사적 기억은 항상 경합과 갈등을 낳을 수 있다는 점을 강조하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to understand some characteristics related to representations of the collective historical memories with a comparative study of the War Memorial of Korea(WMK) and Jeju 4.3 Peace Park. In this study, it is asked why the representations of war memories in the WMK and Peace Park are simultaneously similar and contrasted. Existing scholarly works on these public memorials largely overlook many relevant aspects such as historical evolution of war memorial construction other than the historically specific experience of the South Korean democratic transition. This study hopes to overcome this limit by introducing recently developed conjunctural approach of historical sociology. In doing so, it is expected to highlight the palimpsest practices of spatial organization in the processes of collective representation of war.
