Critical Interpretations of Digital Labor on Digital Platforms = Developing the Philosophy of Technology Perspectives

국문 초록 (Abstract)

21세기 초에, 소셜 네트웍 사이트, 검색 엔진, 그리고 스마트폰과 같은 디지털 플랫폼은 매우 빠른 속도로 성장하고 있으며, 사람들의 일상생활을 변화시키고 있다. 본 논문은 디지털 플랫폼을 기술철학의 전통 중 기술 비판론 입장에서 해석한다. 기술철학의 세 가지 측면, 즉 도구적 이론부터 비판적 이론까지를 설명하고, 이를 플랫폼 기술에서 어떻게 적용•확대해야 하는지를 논의한다. 특히 본 논문은 플랫폼 기술을 기술비판적 입장에서 해석하는 바, 이는 기술과 인간 간의 관계, 특히 기술과 노동과의 관계를 보다 정밀하게 살펴보고자 하는 데 그 의의가 있다. 마지막으로, 본 논문은 디지털 플랫폼 소유자와 기업들이 디지털 노동자를 어떻게 유용하는지를 자유노동과 렌트라는 개념을 통해서 해석하고 있다. 이러한 과정을 통해 플랫폼에 의존하는 21세기 자본주의 사회에 대한 분석적인 프레임을 제공하고자 했다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In the early 21<SUP>st</SUP> century, digital platforms, such as social network sites, search engines, and smartphones and their operating systems, have rapidly grown and changed people’s daily activities. This article addresses the characteristics of digital platforms from the standpoint of the critical theory of technology in the tradition of the philosophy of technology. It explicates the historical development of three different approaches to technology, from instrumental theory to substantive theory to figure out the main characteristics of critical theory. It applies these frameworks to platform technologies, but mainly from the critical approach of technology, in order to advance our understanding of the relationship between technology and human beings, in particular digital technology and labor. Finally, it investigates the ways in which digital platform owners and corporations appropriate digital labor and their platform in making profits through ‘the dual extraction of free labor and rent’ in order to provide an analytical framework for the platform-driven capitalist society.
