      Lee, Seungyeon. 2017. Qualitative Study on Genre Recognition of Native Korean Speakers -Based on the comparison between authentic texts and textbook reading materials-. Journal of Korean Language Education 28 English Edition: 79-103. This study was conducted with the purpose of finding linguistic clues used by Korean native speakers when distinguishing genres, and through this, providing information needed for developing teaching materials for reading instruction in Korean. The scope of this study was limited to expository writings, news articles, columns, and critiques, genres which were found to be most frequently used in advanced level Korean teaching materials. After selecting samples of authentic texts and teaching materials from textbooks corresponding to each genre, a questionnaire was created and administered to 10 Korean university students. Then, as a follow-up to the questionnaire, an in-depth interview regarding linguistic factors affecting genre distinction was conducted. Study results show that respondents correctly identified the genres of authentic expository writing samples and news articles(informative texts), but often confused columns and critiques(appellative texts). In regards to sample texts from teaching materials, most participants identified the genres of the texts as something other than the genres that were intended. It was thus found that texts in current Korean language textbooks lack in characteristics of the genres presented. Additionally, it was found that study participants actively use clues such as form and contents of the title and overall structure and style of the writing when making distinctions between genres. So far, study of genre has depended on utilizing corpus or text analysis to find characteristics of genres. However, this study is significant in that it seeks to investigate language users’ knowledge and recognition of genre. (University of Seoul)
