In this paper, I used the term of ‘traditional society’ in meaning of pre-modern times and spaces, that is to say ‘Chosun dynasty’, characterizing of the agricultural economy, the royal regime, and Confucianism. In the society, women lived very miserable lives. Their oppressive and closed life-style was due to political ambitions of patriarchy. Since patrilineal system was step by step strengthened in that period, married women were gradually locked in patriarchal rules and families. Moreover, they had to give birth to their son and heir. They couldn’t marry again, though their husbands were dead. Devotion to one husband was the best virtue for women in the times.
Naturally manysided discourses related to patriarchal morals were produced by the governing classes, and spread far and wide in the society. But, on the other hand, opposite discourses was formed by some scholars belong to the positive school and some bright women, though a little.
In Korean society, the lights and shadows of women’s lives depond on that they had self-awareness as strangers to their lives, or not. From adaptation to the ideal type for woman that the society pursued, to resistance to that, we can seize different aspects of woman’s real life, that is to say, blind obedience and adaptation, or disagreement and confusion, or deviation and game, and so on.
To discuss about harmonic relationship and life for the two sexes, we also need to have interests and investigations about man’s reality in that period. Besides, we have to seek more texts about individual’s lives in that times, like ‘Myam diary’.
