      As express courier market expands rapidly, companies are exposed to fierce competition. To cope with struggle for their survival, the express courier companies are continuously making their every effort to improve their service system. Network design ...

      As express courier market expands rapidly, companies are exposed to fierce competition. To cope with struggle for their survival, the express courier companies are continuously making their every effort to improve their service system. Network design is usually constructed based on the initial investment and operating costs for terminals and service centers in express couriers. However, continuous reconfiguration for network design is required according as the service environment is rapidly changing. This study suggests a hybrid optimization/simulation approach to reconfiguring an express courier service network with respect to assignments of service centers to consolidation terminals, adjustments of their cutoff times and extensions of terminal capacities. With the hybrid procedure the ynamic nature of the express courier service network can be integrated into the optimization model. The optimal values of network reconfiguration parameters are found while complying with the desired performance level of the service network.
