마가복음에서 상위어(hypernym)로 쓰이는 λέγω의 현재 시제-형태 번역 제안

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고의 목적은 마가복음에서 λέγω 동사가 부정과거 시제-형태(tense-form)의 하위어(hyponym) 다음에 현재 시제-형태의 상위어(hypernym)로 연이어 사용되는 구문에 대한 대안적인 번역을 제안하는 것이다. 하지만 상위어와 하위어가 나란히 쓰여 의미 중복이 일어난다는 표면적인 현상에만 주목할 경우, 두 시제-형태 사이의 차이를 간과하고 현재 시제-형태의 상위어가 수행하는 담론 문법 차원의 역할을 이해하지 못하게 된다. 상위어는 현재 시제-형태로 사용될 경우 하위어와 구별되는 별도의 동작이나 의미를 전달하는 의미론적 기능이 아니라, 담론 문법 차원에서 매우 중요한 담론-화용론적 기능을 담당한다. 따라서 만일 번역 과정에 상위어를 생략해 버리면, 이러한 기능에 담긴 ‘의미’도 함께 사라져 버린다. 이에 본고는 주동사와 분사를 막론하고 λέγω의 현재 시제-형태가 유사한 의미의 하위어와 나란히 사용될 경우, 이를 단순히 용어나 보문소로 간주하여 번역 과정에 생략해서는 안 된다고 주장한다. 오히려 상위어가 담당하는 담론 문법 차원의 역할을 감안하여 번역 과정에 이를 적절하게 반영해야 한다는 것이다. 아울러 본고는 헬라어 시제의 핵심 개념에 대한 새로운 이해와 담론 문법이 제시하는 참신한 설명을 참조할 때, 상위어-하위어라는 독특한 구문을 통해 마가가 전달하고자 했던 의도가 더 잘 이해될 수 있다고 주장한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to propose an appropriate translation for the present tense-form of λέγω, which is used as a hypernym in the Gospel of Mark. When the hypernym is used in the present tense-form, it performs a very important discourse-pragmatic function in terms of discourse grammar. If the hypernym is omitted in translation, this feature too will disappear. Therefore, I argue that if the present tense-form of λέγω, regardless of the main verb and participle, is used together with a hyponym with a similar meaning in a sentence, it should not be omitted in translation in the sense that it is simply regarded as a pleonasm or a complementizer. Rather, it should be considered and appropriately reflected in the translation by taking into account the role of the discourse grammar. Furthermore, I argue that if we take a new understanding of the core concept of the Greek tense and properly consider the novel explanations that the recent discourse grammar presents for the discourse-pragmatic function of each form, Mark’s intention that is conveyed through the distinct use of the hypernym and hyponym would be better understood.
