This paper aims to reveal the similarities between the Japanese political situation in the 1960s and 2020s through the perspective of the repetition of Karatani Kojin’s history.
Karatani said the history of global capitalism was repeated around 60 years, and argued that this repetition was repeated in Japan during the Meiji and Showa periods. If we introduce this view of Karatani in the present, it can be inferred that Japan in the 1960s will be repeated in the 2020s.
The 1960s was the time of the security struggle, the biggest event in Japanese political history. And unlike the security struggle in the 50s against the security treaty in 1960, this has been radical and radical, centered on students. As a result, the general public moved away from the struggle, and after the failure of the security struggle, Japan changed into an economic one-sided political system.
Currently, Japan’s rightward shift in the 2010s took place in politics, but this was a gap from the general public. And in the 2020s, the Ukraine war, the trade conflict between the U.S. and China, and the U.S. interest rate hike changed the trend to prioritize the economy.
Then, how will the Shosei Maru incident, which occurred in 1975, be repeated? If 1960 is set to 2020, the time when the Shosei Maru incident will occur is still in the future. However, the period may be accelerated because the repetition of history cannot be said to be completely every 60 years. Therefore, it is time to come up with a solution to prevent direct victims such as the Shosei Maru incident.
