Free end removable partial denture always rotates around certain axis when functional load in applied. It the forces, which occurs during the functional load is applied, are not controled within physiologically permissible level, the deformation of retainers and harmful effect to the abutment is occurred.
Free end removable partial denture must satisfy the following basic principle at the view point of biomechanics and therefore the satisfactory results will be obtained when the routine check up is performed and the patient maintains the oral condition properly.
1. The effectiveness of the direct retainer is increased when the indirect retainer is located anterior to the fulcrum axis, which is the line drawn between the retentive tips of the clasp.
2. The effectiveness of the direct retainer is increased as the guiding planes are properly prepared, contract with guiding plates, and the path of insertion and removal is performed definitely, and also the guiding platers rotates and should not apply the binding force to the abutment as the proper space is provided bellow the guiding plane when the functional movement is applied.
3. If possible, the rest of the direct retainer must be located to the mesial occlusal surface of the abutment, and the retentive portion of the direct retainer must be designed posterior to the axis of the rotation to release the direct retainer from the tooth when the functional movement is applied, and also if the retentive portion is located anterior to the axis of the rotation, the clasp with minimal undercut or wrought wire clasp with good flexibility should be selected.
