현재와 대화하는 조선시대사 = The History of the Joseon Dynasty in Dialogue with the Present

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 2023년 역사학회 정기 학술대회에서 발표한 내용을 손질한 것이다. 학술대회 취지에 따라, 지금까지 나의 역사 연구를 되돌아 보되, 역사가로서 조선시대를 연구할 때 현재의 시각과 당대의 맥락 사이에서 고민했던 경험을 자유롭게 이야기 나누는 형식의 글이다. 주지하듯이, 조선시대 역사는 식민사관의 공격을 집중적으로 받았다. 일본의 한국 지배를 합리화하기 위해 조선의 역사를 매우 부정적으로 묘사하였다. 해방 후에는, 당연히 식민사관을 부정하기 위한 연구가 봇물 터지듯 하였다. 내재적 발전론이 그런 경향을 대표하였다. 이 글에서는 먼저 나의 역사관을 10대 때의 경험을 중심으로 간략히 소개하고, 지금까지 내가 해 온 조선시대사 연구 성과를 통시적 시각에 중점을 두어 소개하였다. 다음으로는, 조선시대에 대하여 식민사관과 내재적 발전론이 정반대의 설명을 제공하지만, 접근 방법은 서로 통하는 점을 강조하였다. 현재의 이념적 필요성을 위해 조선시대라는 과거를 자의적으로 설명하는 방식이 같다는 것이다. 대안으로는, 내가 그래왔듯이, 통시적 시각과 동아시아라는 상위의 맥락에서 조선시대 역사를 조망하는 방법을 소개하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article is an edited version of a presentation given at the 2023 Annual Meeting of the Korean Historical Association, held under the theme “Between the Historical Context of the Time and Present-Day Perspective.” In line with the conference’s purpose, I will reflect on my historical research so far, freely discussing my experience in struggles between the current perspective and the context of the time when studying the Joseon period. The history of Joseon was intensely attacked by colonial historians under the Japanese rule.
In order to rationalize Japan’s domination of Korea, the history of Joseon was portrayed in a very negative light. After the liberation of Korea, there was a outpouring of research to deny the colonial view. The inherent development theory represented this trend. In this article, I will first briefly introduce my view of history, focusing on my experiences as a teenager, and then present my research on the history of the Joseon dynasty, focusing on a diachronic perspective. I also emphasize that although colonial view and the inherent development theory offer diametrically opposed explanations of the Joseon dynasty, their approaches are compatible. They both arbitrarily explain the past, the Joseon period, to suit the ideological needs of the present. As an alternative, I suggest a diachronic perspective and a way of viewing Joseon history in the larger context of East Asia.
