While there are music therapy courses from undergraduate schools in the USA, there are only from graduate school in Korea so that there should be restriction on completion units in the curriculum of graduate school of music therapy. Owing to this situation, there are few courses about music in the curriculum of graduate school of music therapy in Korea but students have been nevertheless admitted into graduate schools no matter what they majored in at undergraduate schools. In view of these situations, the objective of the present study is to investigate the differences in the recognition of the curriculum of music therapy between those graduate students of music therapy who majored in music and those who did not.
The sample group of questionnaire in this study is fixed to the 86 students presently (May 2005) majoring in music therapy at graduate school of music therapy, Sookmyung Women's University. This restriction to sample is due to the fact that there are so many differences in the curriculum among graduate schools in Korea.
According to this study, the following three conclusions can be drawn.
Firstly, whether they majored in music at undergraduate schools or not has no statistically significant influence on opinions about curriculum of music therapy (the degree of satisfaction with music therapy courses and preference to them).
Secondly, whether they majored in music at undergraduate schools or not has a statistically significant influence on self-confidence in music skill among opinions about self-confidence at clinical situation (self-confidence in music skill and clinical skill) perceived in the curriculum of music therapy, i.e., those who majored in music at undergraduate schools are more confident in music skill than those who did not. However, it has no statistically significant influence on self-confidence in clinical skill.
Thirdly, whether they majored in music at undergraduate schools or not has no statistically significant influence on the expectation of being able to be a good music therapist (the expectation for aptitude in music therapy courses and capability for perception as a music therapist).
