정물화의 관점으로 본 죽음의 존엄성 - 영화 <스틸라이프>를 중심으로 = The Dignity of Death in the Perspective of Still Life Painting - Focusing on the Movie <Still Life>

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 무연고 시신의 장례를 다룬 영화 <스틸라이프(Still Life)>의 분석을 통해 삶과 죽음의 의미, 죽음의 존엄성을 고찰하는 데 있다. 이 연구는 다양한 죽음가운데서도 무연고 죽음이 사회에서 갖는 의미에 대해 살피고자 하며, 연고 없는 죽음을 다루는 공적인 차원의 조치를 통해 죽음의 의미를 좀 더 선명하게 살펴보고자 한다. 고령화 문제의 심화, 1인 가족의 증가, 가족 해체 등의 사회적 문제는 무연고 죽음과 직결된다. 무연고 죽음에 관한 관심의 증대, 이와 관련한 법령 마련 등은 무연고 죽음의문제를 진지하게 돌아보아야 한다는 사회적 요청과도 맞닿아 있다. 이를 위해 이 연구에서는 우선 무연고 죽음/시신에 일찍부터 관심을 가져온 영국과우리나라의 관련 법령 및 규정 등을 살펴보고, 무연고 죽음의 문제를 직접적으로 다룬영화 <스틸라이프>의 각 장면을 ‘정물화’의 개념으로 분석하였다. 사물이 맺는 관계, 사물을 통한 사색적 관조를 가능케 하는 정물화는 죽음에 대한 관찰과 깊은 사유를 요구한다. 주인공 존 메이가 무연고사망자들을 대하는 모습은, 세상과 이별하는 죽음의순간까지도 모든 사람은 존엄성이 지속된다는 것을 말해준다. 또한 모든 무연고 시신의 삶을 존중하며 장례를 치르는 존 메이의 행위는 아무도 관심을 갖지 않는 무연고사망자에 대한 공영 장례의 의미를 확인할 수 있다, 고독한 사회 속 고독한 개인의 증가와무관하지 않은 무연고 시신에 대한 장례는 모든 죽음에 대한 존중이자, 역설적으로 삶의 존엄성을 긍정하는 것이라고 할 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of life and death, and the dignity of death, through the analysis of the movie <Still Life>,” which deals with the funeral of an unrelated deceased. This study seeks to examine the meaning of unclaimed death in society among various types of death, and to examine the meaning of death more clearly through public-level measures to deal with the death which has no relatives. Social problems such as the deepening of the aging problem, the increase in single-person families, and the breakup of families are directly related to unclaimed deaths. The growing interest in unclaimed deaths and the establishment of related laws are also in line with the social request to seriously look at the issue of unclaimed deaths.
To this end, in this study, we first looked at related laws and regulations in the UK and Korea, which have been interested in unclaimed death/corpse from an early age, and compared each scene of the movie <Still Life> that directly dealt with the issue of unclaimed death to a scene from ‘Still Life’. Analyzed as a concept. Still life painting, which enables contemplative contemplation of the relationships between objects and objects, requires observation and deep thinking about death. The way the main character, John May, treats those who died without any connection shows that all people continue to have dignity even at the moment of death when they say goodbye to the world. In addition, John May’s act of holding a funeral while respecting the lives of all unclaimed deceased confirms the meaning of public funerals for unclaimed deceased who no one cares about. Funerals can be said to be a respect for all deaths and, paradoxically, an affirmation of the dignity of life.
