Korea government has been pushed the public museum project since 1999. As of 2006, the program has financed for 13 museums investing ₩ 30,755 million, and 7 more museums (continuing project: 3, new project:4) were going to be financed in 2007 with ₩ 3,758 million. Also, it is planned to expand governmental investment for the museum construction as well as developing diversified supporting plan for where the infrastructure of the fine arts is insufficient to expand the base population who enjoys art and promote citizen's cultural right through the regionally balanced development of the art. With such change in direction of the governmental policy, four public museums, including the Hyundai Art Museum opened in 2007 and the Jeju Museum of Art opened in 2009, are operated in Jeju area.
In this study on the 'strategy for invigorating the exhibition program of public art museum in Jeju area', we want to examine the existing problems of the public art museums in Jeju area and suggest the direction for the project exhibition as a solution.
Selecting representative public art museums of the administrative district which is larger than the megalopolis (gwang-yeok city) or the province (do), we chose four common type of the project exhibitions and analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of each to suggest the strategy for the project exhibition in Jeju area's public art museums. As a result of the analysis, except the Seoul Museum of Art and the Seogwipo Gidang Art Museum, most of the surveyed museums were established during 1992 to 2009, and share the similar purpose of establishment; promoting the residents' appreciation of the art, providing the comprehensive cultural space for the art education, establishing the regional art, and contributing to the development of contemporary Korean art. The project exhibitions of each art museum were held 15 times per year on average. And with the characteristic as the local public art museum, such exhibitions were focused on the regional characteristics and the local artists.
When separately considering the exhibitions of the selected art museum, on the surface, it seems that the exhibitions are unique to each art museum. However, when they are categorized into several types, distinctive characteristics were not found very much. Based on the strengths and weaknesses found during the survey, we suggested the 4 types of project exhibition for the public art museums of the Jeju area.
First, by planning the exhibitions incorporating the succession and reinterpretation of Jeju's societal , cultural and historical issues with the art, we recommend to promote the art museum's image while acting as a landmark for culture and exhibition of the Jeju area.
Second, we suggest to host the invitation and project exhibit for discovery and support of the next generation artists as well as the support of the artists of medium standing and/or doyen artists. With the works exhibited at the exhibition, the museums could establish their own database, which would ultimately contribute to the development of the Jeju;s art and the diversification of the support for the artists.
Third, establishing the network with other local public art museums through the exchange exhibitions would be helpful in sharing the culture with other geographical regions.
Forth, hosting of the international mega exhibit might also promote the strengthening of the international competitiveness of the Jeju.
Our recommendations for the direction of the exhibition of Jeju area's public art museum have meaning for providing the basic information to activate the Jeju's public art museum's exhibits. Further, we hope the public art museums of the Jeju area would contribute to the development of the regional art culture as well as the Korean art.
