방패와 창의 안보딜레마: 일본의 TMD 구축과 중국의 대응 역학관계를 중심으로 = Security Dilemma between a Sword and a Shield: Japan's Theater Missile Defense and China's Reactions, and Their Relational Dynamics

This article demonstrates how Japan's decision to join the Theater Missile Defense(TMS) initiated by the United States has invited China's reaction and produced what may appear to be a descending spiral in the Sino-Japan relations. We demonstrate that the security dilemma between the two major Northeast Asian states has been triggered by Japan's bid for increasing its missile defensive postures. Our case study demonstrates that Japan's motives to increase its defensive capabilities have essentially increased China's threat perception, which perceives it as offensively. With China's threat perception and Japan's TMD, the military dimension of the Sino-Japan relations has elapsed into a security dilemma, which inevitably strengthened the action-reaction dynamics throughout the 1990s and 2000s. This article looks at in detail how China's missile development was reactive to Japan's TMD decisions and installments.
