『독립신문』에 나타난 미국인식 = Korean Perception of the US in The Independent

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This is a research on the Korean welcoming perception of the United States shown in The Independent. The publishers of The Independent, Seo Jae pil and Yun Chi Ho, are pro-US reformists. They thought following a US model is the best way for Korea’s developing in to a modern state. They wrote a number of pro-US articles for columns and society pages of the newspaper. Pro-US broadcasting stance of The Independent have large influence on the perception of the US among Koreans in the Greater Korean Empire.
Firstly, The Independent portrayed the US as a state of democracy and humanitarianism while complimenting their installing democratic political system and practicing theory of universal human rights. However, The Independent could not insist on republic system because the Greater Korean Empire was under absolute monarchy. The Independent also depicted the US as a state of duty and sympathy, which offers support for the independence of the lesser powers.
Secondly, The Independent reported that US was the world’s wealthiest state and emphasized the fact that the US obtained wealth and power through international trade. The publishers regarded international trade important as a core of state development. The Independent reported US is wealthy and have no interest in acquiring newlands.This appealed to Koreans who consider maintaining lands crucial for independence.
Thirdly, The Independent portrayed the US as a modernized state that introduces gender-equal education. The publishers of The Independent suggested that modernization of Korea depends on educating manpower. They insisted on installing modern Western education to Korea to train people into modern beings. The newspaper frequently reported gender-equal education of the US. The Independent admired American missionaries who offer gender-equal education in Korea.
Fourthly, THe Independent often carried articles on Christian education, work of protestant missionaries, Christian education and the US policies on religion. The majority of missionaries who workedin Koreain the end of 19thcentury were American. They built hospitals and a number of schools. The US gave financial support to them. The publishers of The Independent thought Christianity would be important for modernization and economic development of Korea, and reported Christianity played a positive role to raised patriotism and perception of independence among Koreans.
The Independent had a great influence on the formation of pro-US perceptions among Koreans at the end of 20thcentury. Consequently it contributed to the social development and modernization activities to a large degree. Nonetheless, their weakness was in blind and uncritical pro-US stance of the newspaper. As a result, the elites of the Greater Korean Empire did not realize the imperial face of the US. These were the positive and negative effects of pro-US perceptions that appeared in The Independent.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 『독립신문』에 나타난 한국인의 호의적인 미국인식을 연구한 것이다. 『독립신문』을 발간한 서재필과 윤치호 등은 친미성향의 개혁론자들이다. 이들은 한국이 근대국가로 성장하려면 미국을 모델로 삼는 것이 가장 좋다고 생각했다. 이들은 『독립신문』의 논설이나 사회면에 친미성향의 기사들을 많이 실었다. 『독립신문』의 친미적 보도 자세는 자연스럽게 대한제국 시기 한국인의 미국인식에 큰 영향을 미쳤다.
첫째, 『독립신문』은 미국을 민주주의와 인도주의가 발휘되는 나라라고 보도하였다. 『독립신문』은 미국이 민주주의 정치제도를 운영하고, 천부인권설을 실천하는 나라라고 칭찬하였다. 다만 『독립신문』이 민주공화제를 주장하지 못한 것은 대한제국의 정치체제가 전제군주제였기 때문이다. 또한 『독립신문』은 미국이 약소국을 도와주고 그들의 독립을 후원해 주는 의리와 인정이 있는 나라라고 보도하였다.
둘째, 『독립신문』은 미국을 세계에서 가장 부유한 나라라고 보도하였다. 『독립신문』은 미국이 해외무역을 통해 부유하고 강한 나라가 되었던 사실을 강조하였다. 『독립신문』의 간행자들은 해외무역이 국가발전의 근본임을 중시하였던 것이다. 또한 『독립신문』은 미국이 영토 욕심이 없는 부유한 국가라고 보도하였다. 이는 영토 보존을 국가독립의 요건 가운데 생각하는 한국인들에게 호소력을 발휘하였다.
셋째, 『독립신문』은 미국이 남녀평등교육을 실시하는 문명개화의 나라라고 보도했다. 『독립신문』 간행자들은 한국 근대화는 인재교육에 달려있다고 생각하였다. 그들은 한국에서 서양의 근대교육의 가르쳐 근대적 인간을 길러내야 한다고 주장하였다. 『독립신문』은 미국에서 남녀평등 교육이 실시되는 것을 자주 보도하였다. 『독립신문』은 프로테스탄트 선교사들이 한국에서 미국 방식의 남녀평등교육을 실시하는 것을 칭송하였다.
넷째, 『독립신문』은 개신교교육, 선교사의 선교활동, 개신교국가 미국의 종교정책을 자주 보도하였다. 19세기 말에 한국에서 활동한 선교사들은 대부분 미국인이었다. 이들은 병원과 많은 학교를 설립하였다. 그리고 미국은 이들의 활동을 재정적으로 지원하였다. 『독립신문』의 간행자들은 개신교가 한국의 근대화화 경제발전에 중요한다고 생각하였고, 또 개신교가 한국인들에게 애국심과 독립의식을 심어주는데 긍정적인 역할을 했다고 보도하였다.
『독립신문』은 20세기 말 한국인들의 호의적인 대미인식 형성에 큰 영향을 미쳤으며, 한국의 사회발전과 근대화운동에 큰 도움을 주었다. 그러나 『독립신문』의 호의적 대미자세는 맹목적이며 무비판적인 약점이 있다. 이로 인해 대한제국의 집권층은 미국의 제국주의적 측면을 깨닫지 못하고 말았다. 이럼 점들이 『독립신문』의 호의적인 대미인식에 나타난 순기능과 역기능이었다고 평할 수 있다.
