중세 유럽 문장과 연금술 상징의 관련성 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 연구논문과 단행본 조사에 기초하여 중세유럽 문장과 연금술 상징의 연관성을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. W. J. T. 미첼의 이미지텍스트 개념은 이 관계를 밝히는 데 유용한 자료를 제공한다. 중세문장과 연금술 도판들이 다양한 이미지텍스트로 구성되었기 때문이다. 미첼의 이미지텍스트는 이미지와 텍스트의 대립을 화해시켜, 다학제적 연구를 가능하게 한다. 이는 본 연구가 궁극적 목표로 하는 인문학과 그래픽 디자인의 접목에도 유효한 방법론이다.
문장 상징은 십자군 전쟁을 통해 중동에서 수입된 점성학과 연금술의 영향을 받았다. 십자군 전쟁을 치르면서 유럽 문장은 집단상징에서 개인식별 수단으로 정착된다. 유럽 병사들 역시 친숙한 짐승을 자신들의 무구에 그리는 대신, 쌍두독수리와 유니콘 같은 이국적 동물들을 그려 넣었다. 이러한 상상동물들은 비잔틴 예술과 연금술 텍스트에 공통되게 나타나는 요소다. 따라서 문장 상징의 의미를 제대로 규명하려면 연금술 전통을 연구하는 것이 매우 중요하다.
본 연구는 연금술의 세계관이 문장의 기하학 문양뿐 아니라 색채 사용 규칙에도 영향을 주었음을 밝히고자 한다. 르네상스에 출판된 연금술 저작은 연금술 엠블럼과 문장 상징 사이에 놀라운 유사성이 있음을 보여준다. 이 점을 연금술의 위대한 작업 4단계에 등장하는 동물들의 상징적 재현에 초점을 맞추어 설명하고자 한다. 마지막으로 독일 마이센 도자기의 제작 과정과 스위스 네슬레 로고 디자인의 변천을 통해 연금술이 문장에 끼친 영향을 입증하고자 한다.
현대 로고의 기원은 중세 유럽 문장에 있다. 문장은 고대에 태어난 고정된 상징이 아니라 상징체계의 살아있는 흔적이다. 그래픽 전문가들이 중세 문장을 활용한 창조적인 디자인을 하는 데 이 논문이 작은 도움이 되길 바란다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to examine the relationship between alchemical symbols and medieval heraldic emblems based on research papers and books concerned. Especially W. J. T. Mitchell`s notion of imagetext helps this paper to elucidate the relationship because both medieval heraldry and alchemical illustrations consist of various imagetexts. Mitchell synthesizes the opposition between image and text in the concept of the imagetext. His theory offers the methodological frame work to carry out interdisciplinary studies, which is the ultimate goal of this paper that links humanities and graphic design.
Heraldic symbolism was highly influenced by astrology and alchemy imported from the Middle East during the Crusades. European soldiers, rather than painting domestic beasts on their armor, favored exotic creatures like lions, double-headed eagles, and unicorns.
It was not until the Crusade that Europeans used heraldry as symbol of personal identification. Fabulous animals of heraldic charges were common in Byzantine art and alchemy texts. Therefore, it is very important to study hermetic tradition to investigate the meaning of heraldic symbols.
I argue that the philosophy of alchemy had impact not only on geometric heraldic charges but also on heraldic rules controlling color combinations. Alchemy texts published in the Renaissance period show that there were surprising similarities between alchemical emblems and heraldic symbols. I focus on symbolic representation of animals expressed during the four stages of the Great Work(magnum opus) in alchemy. Finally, I prove that alchemy influenced on heraldry by explaining production process of Meissen porcelain and the Nestlé logo evolution.
The origins of the trademarks are in heraldry. Heraldry is not a fixed marker of ancient birth but a living vestige of symbolic system. I want this study will be helpful for graphic designers to develop creative modern design utilizing medieval heraldry.
