John Donne was an English poet in seventeenth century. He was one of major members in metaphysical poets. He wrote his poetry by new technics, images, and mataphors. He rejected the convention of Petrachan adoration. His poetry was the expression in unconventional, witty language of all the moods of a lover. Wit may be considered as a kind of discordia concors; a combination of dissimiliar images or discovery of occult resemblances in things apparently unlike. His major work, songs and sonnets, was expressed these poetical technics.
Russian Formalism has an important part in 20th century literary criticism. Shklovsky, as a formalist, said that the technique of art is to make objects ‘unfamiliar’, to make forms difficult, to increase the difficult and length of perception. He thought that ‘Defamiliarisation’ was one of his most attractive concepts.
This thesis is to study ‘Defamiliarisation’ and then the literary theory try to be adapted to John Donne’s poetry.
