다중(Multitude)이론의 비판적 검토 : 사회비판의 방식을 중심으로 = The Critical Examination on the Theory of Multitude : Focusing on Its Way of Social Critique

국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근 기존의 노동자 계급주의 이론이나 시민사회 이론과는 구별되는 ‘다중이론’이 사회 비판이론으로서 한국사회 내에서 일정한 이론적 영향력을 미치고 있는 것으로 판단된다. 현재 다중이론은 반세계화 운동의 부상, 일상권력(미시권력)에 대한 비판, 소수자 운동의 출현 등 다양한 사회적 흐름들과 결합하면서 이론적 관심의 대상으로 부각되고 있는 것으로 보인다. 그리고 최근에는 ‘촛불시위’ 양상을 분석하는 몇몇 언론들에서 ‘다중’, ‘집단지성’ 등의 개념들을 차용하기도 하였다.
다중이론의 비판사회이론적 핵심은 네그리와 하트에 의해서 ‘제국’이라는 시대진단과 ‘다중’의 역량에 기초한 대안적 정치질서의 모색으로 표현되었다. 이글의 목적은 다중이론을 그것의 시대진단 및 대안모색 전략을 중심으로 비판적으로 검토하는데에 있다. 이를 위해 이글은 먼저 다중이론의 형성 과정을 살펴보고 그것의 국제적 · 국내적 등장 맥락을 간략히 검토할 것이다. 다음으로는 제국 개념에 대한 검토를 통해 이들의 시대진단을, 다중 개념에 대한 검토를 통해 이들의 대안 모색 방식을 살펴볼 것이다. 그리고 마지막으로 이들의 이러한 시대진단과 대안모색이 가지는 의미와 한계를 비판적으로 검토하고자 한다. 여기서는 『제국』이 제시하는 시대진단과 사회비판의 방식에 대해, 특히 특정한 존재론에 기초한 사회비판의 방식이 가지는 문제점들에 대해 중심적으로 검토하게 될 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Lately, the theory of multitude seems to have more theoretical influences on Korean society. As connected with social movements such as anti-globalization movement, the critique of micro-power, and the minority movement, it happened to be the focus of a number of theoretical investigations. To cite an example, the concepts of multitude and swarm intelligence came up to be applied into the explanation of the recent and famous candle demonstration.
The aim of this thesis is to critically examine the theory's diagnosis of the present times and its pursuit of political alternative presented as the concepts of Empire and Multitude by Antonio Negri and Michael Hardt. To fulfill this aim, firstly I explained how the theory of multitude has been formed, and then revealed the social backgrounds which bring it about in both international and Korean society. Secondly, I explained the concept of Empire(the diagnosis of the present times) and Multitude (political alternative). Finally, focusing on the way of the social critique based on the theory's peculiar ontology, I pointed out the significance and limitation of the theory.
