(Multilingual Abstract)

This study examined potential mediating effects of anxiety and anger suppression in the association between inflated responsibility and compulsive checking behavior. Specifically, it was hypothesized that the relationship between inflated responsibility and checking behavior would be mediated by state anxiety and anger suppression. Participants were 138 undergraduate students who completed a set of self-report questionnaires that measure inflated responsibility, state anxiety, anger suppression, and checking behavior. Mediation models were analyzed using multivariate regression followed by bootstrapping to test the significance of the indirect pathways, and the dual mediation model was tested using PROCESS macro. The results indicated that state anxiety and anger suppression significantly mediated the association between inflated responsibility and compulsive checking in each simple mediation model. However, when both state anxiety and anger suppression were included in the model simultaneously, only anger suppression emerged as a significant mediator of the effect of inflated responsibility on checking behavior. Based on the findings, the theoretical and clinical implications as well as the limitations of the study are discussed.
