This study explored the operational characteristics and improvements of local art education by examining the current status of Korean classical music classes in local art high schools. Although Korean classical music is receiving a lot of attention at home and abroad, Korean classical music education at the school site has many difficulties. In particular, arts high schools based in the region, such as Chungnam Arts High School and Sejong Arts High School, are facing a crisis of the existence of Korean classical music majors in the department due to a decrease in the number of students majoring. Various causes can be found, such as a decrease in the school-age population and geographical characteristics adjacent to the metropolitan area, and if this situation continues, it may hinder the development of local Korean classical music and the development of Korean classical music. Therefore, in this study, we examined the class management methods implemented by two schools that are struggling with the lack of students majoring in Korean classical music. As a result, for the smooth operation of the curriculum, various characteristic projects suitable for the school conditions were being carried out, such as the establishment of the school's own cooperative and the creation of a space for Pungryubang. However, it is time to take measures to improve the quality of Korean classical music classes, as fundamental causes such as the difficulty of chorus and ensemble classes due to the lack of students and the lack of teachers majoring in Korean classical music have not been addressed. Therefore, this study looked at the operation cases of local art high schools and suggested issues to be improved and pursued in the future to revitalize Korean classical music education. It is hoped that discussions for the development of local Korean classical music education will continue in the future, providing an opportunity for the balanced development of local art and smooth training of Korean classical music talents.
