From the late third to the fourth century, hermits such as St. Anthony of Egypt and St. Paul of Thebes withdrew into the Egyptian desert, renouncing familial ties and worldly attachments to cultivate a rigorously ascetic way of life. Through shared spiritual discipline and fervent devotion, these hermits contributed to the standardization of monastic practice. Notably, the daily prayer regimen established by St. Anthony, consisting of three fixed times of prayer including a nightly vigil, became the standard for the Desert Fathers. Although considerable scholarly attention has been devoted to the Desert Fathers, the processes by which their ascetic standards were formulated and disseminated, as well as the theological and spiritual insights these standards offer to later generations, particularly those engaged in contemporary prayer movements or monastic renewal, have not been sufficiently examined. The study of this process constitutes a significant concern for those engaged in contemporary prayer movements or pursuing a monastic vocation.
By examining several instances in which attempts to standardize the hermitic way of life were unsuccessful, alongside the enduring practices of Saint Anthony and the Desert Fathers who followed him, this study seeks to identify the underlying factors that contributed to both failure and success in the formation of monastic norms. It examines how their new way of life, particularly daily prayer, originated and became standardized in the desert. It also explores how the Desert Fathers established key elements of monastic identity, including the adoption of the term "monk”, the development of new theological concepts appropriate to ascetic life, and the formulation of a theoretical framework for monastic ascetic theology. Finally, this study presents three core principles embodied in the standardization process, and considers their relevance for enriching the Prayer and Holy Spirit Movement within Reformed Life Theology and inspiring prayer leaders and movements across Korea.
