The purpose of this study was to study the counseling-related certification systems of representative associations in the U.S. and Canada in order to get implications for improving the counseling specialist certification system operated by the Korean Counseling Association. Ideas obtained from this study are as follows. the Korean Counseling Association needs to make efforts to enhance the benefits of the members who acquired the counseling specialist certificate. Specifically, it is necessary to introduce the liability insurance system for protecting the members from legal problems, property loss and damage, and health-related problems that may happen while providing counseling services. Furthermore, the Korean Counseling Association should publicize the expertise of counseling specialists among insurance companies so that counseling fees charged by counseling specialists may be covered by insurance as in extended health care insurance or accident insurance. It is necessary to establish counseling ‐related undergraduate and graduate curriculums and training courses at institutions certified by the Korean Counseling Association and to give a fast-track certificate to those graduating from the institutions, and to allow those with an equivalent domestic or overseas certificate to get a certificate of the same level through a simplified process.
Under the current supervisor system of the Korean Counseling Association, each supervisor engages only in a specific chapter and is trained to supervise supervisees in the chapter, and this limits the supervisors’ training activities. As in the U.S. and Canada, it is necessary for the supervisors to be able to give training to any supervisees in different chapters. Fourth, the conditions for certificate maintenance and renewal need to be diversified flexibly. In the U.S. and Canada, CEU includes not only attendance at the certification education program of an institution but also participation in and holding of workshops, online seminars, hours to prepare dissertation writing, hours to prepare lectures in college, and hours to prepare publishing. Thus, the Korean Counseling Association may consider the conditions for certificate maintenance and renewal in more diverse aspects.
