The gist of Levinas' philosophy can be understood as redefining subjectivity in relation to others. In Totality and Infinity and Otherwise than Being, he developed the concept of subjectivity. This article will first analyze how Levinas' concept of subjectivity develops, focusing on his two representative works. While 'the self-identifying ego in the mode of representation and possession' and 'the self responding to the revelation of the face' coexist in the early concept of the subjectivity in an unclear way, in the later concept of the subjectivity the 'self in the objective case' precedes 'the self in the nominative case.' Next, dealing with the question of how to accept Levinas' claim that subjectivity lies in the responsibility for the other, I will oppose the interpretation of Levinas as moral sense theory or theological ethics. In conclusion, I will show that the thesis that in the 'saying', which is distinguished from 'the said', the subject is exposed to the other for the sake of the other and the thesis that the meaning of human existence depends on the responsibility for the other can clarify Levinas' claim.
