어진 제작기법을 변용한 초상화 제작 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 조선 후기 어진 6점에 대한 문헌 및 원본 조사와 제작기법을 고찰하고 그 결과를 변용한 초상화 제작에 관한 것이다. 왕의 초상을 그린 어진은 바탕재 비단, 안료, 재료기법 등에서 당시 초상화의 최고 수준을 확인할 수 있으며, 조선의 초상화 양식을 대표한다.
박물관의 어진 모사본 제작사업 보고서와 어진의 제작기법에 관한 논문이 있으나 어진의 공통적인 제작기법에 대한 정리는 미흡하며, 어진 제작기법을 변용한 현대의 초상화 제작에 대한 학술적 연구는 거의 이루어지지 않고 있다.
어진 모사본 제작사업에 참여해서 연구한 어진의 제작기법을 변용하여 초상화를 제작하였다. 어진 제작기법은 크게 상초, 배채, 전채로 나누어 살펴볼 수 있다. 안료는 어진 제작에서 공통적으로 사용한 종류를 분류할 수 있고 배채와 전채에 채색한 일정한 기준과 기법도 확인할 수 있다. 위와 같은 어진의 제작기법을 변용하여 현대 초상화를 연구하였다. 인물별 초상화를 어진의 제작기법으로 표현하고, 전통적인 어진 기법을 현대 초상화에 어떻게 적용 및 변용하는지에 대해 서술한다.
이 연구에서는 전통 어진의 제작기법에 대해 통합적으로 정리하고, 그 제작기법을 현대 초상화에 변용하고자 하였다. 따라서 전통을 계승하여 현대 초상화 창작의 방법과 범위를 확장하고 새로운 방향을 제시하는 부분에서 의의를 찾고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study analyzes the techniques and materials used in royal portraiture during the late Joseon Period. This portraiture represents the pinnacle of portrait making during the Joseon period and the greatest expression of the Joseon portrait style. Extensively utilizing Joseon-period documents, as well as historical and scientific research into six Joseon-period portraits, original portraits were created using the traditional techniques and materials.
Although previous papers about Joseon’s royal portraiture have discussed the creation of reproductions for museums and analyzed the techniques used in specific portraits, a more general understanding of the Joseon techniques is lacking. Through the creation of six original, modern portraits using the traditional techniques, new insights have been made into the techniques and their purposes.
The new portraits were created using a variety of traditional techniques. The techniques can be roughly categorized as parts of the following processes: sangcho (上綃) －drawing ink lines on the silk canvas－, baechae (背彩)－coloring the back of the silk canvas－, and jeonchae (前彩)－coloring the front of the silk canvas. Pigments that were commonly used in royal portraiture of the Joseon period were used in similar ways for the modern portraits. Each portrait subject was represented using the techniques of the Joseon royal portraiture, and the process of applying and adapting traditional techniques to the modern portraits is extensively discussed.
This study sought to integrate the production techniques of traditional royal portraiture into the creation of modern portraits. This shows not only that it is possible to utilize traditional techniques to expand the methods and tools available for creating modern portraits, but also that it is possible to give traditional techniques new significance by using them in a novel way.
