청담조사의 계율관 = ChungDam’s Thought on the Buddhist Precepts

국문 초록 (Abstract)

청담조사(1902-1971)의 발자취는 한국 근 · 현대 불교의 역사이다. 청담조사의 행적, 업적, 영향은 다양하고 지대하다. 본 연구는 그 중에서 청담조사의 계율에 대한 업적을 요약 정리하여 오늘의 한국불교도가 어떻게 인식하고 계승하여야 할 내용을 살펴보려는 글이다.
청담조사의 계율 분야에 대한 행적은 1928년 조선불교학인 대회를 발기하면서 한국불교의 정통성을 확립하고 불조(佛祖)의 정법을 수호하기 위하여 정화불사(淨化佛事)를 시작하였다. 정화의 기본 이념은 정법불교이었다. 청담조사의 정법은 계율에 근거하고 있다. 그는 그 당시 교단의 사조인 정혜쌍수를 계 · 정 · 혜 삼학을 준수하여야 한다고 주장하였다.
청담조사의 계율사상은 용성진종(1864-1940)스님과 동산혜일(1890-1965)스님의 영향으로 삼취정계를 불타적(佛陀的)으로 중생을 구제하자는 것이다. 중생의 구제는 계 · 정 · 혜로 탐 · 진 · 치를 제거, 미(迷)를 오(悟)로써 제거, 자비로써 모든 중생을 동체대비(同體大悲)하자는 것이다.
오늘의 한국불자는 청담조사와 같이 한국불교와 인류를 자기의 피와 살로 느끼면서 보살행을 실천하는 것이 계승해야 할 일이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Venerable Chungdam(1902-1971) became a bhikku (Buddhist priest) in order to seek ‘Mind’ after he opened his eyes of the spirit in 1934. Ever since his enlightenment, he preached the sermon of ‘Mind’ for about 40 years(1928-1971), and he himself became a Forbearance Bodhisattva himself, preserving the way of Bodhisattva in the 20^th century Korea.
Who else might have felt like him that all Koreans are his own flesh and blood? His way of Bodhisattva came from ‘his mind philosophy-his purification thought’. Buddha’s spiritualism was constructed as Venerable Chungdam’s ‘mind philosophy’ on his own words.
Venerable Chungdam’s performances, achievements, and influences are diverse and enormous. Among his various achievements, this research attempts to summarise his achievement on the Buddhist precepts.
Regarding Chungdam’s performance on the Buddhist precepts, it was a good example for him to prevent the spread of the Japanese Buddhism regime that would allow Buddhist bhikkus to take wives and eat meats around the Korean Buddhist temples.
Therefore, he made continuous efforts for the establishment and maintenance of the Korean Buddhism order.
He tried to teach bhikkus and Buddhism believers to observe the buddhist precepts wherever he was.
There is a clear depiction of Mahāyāna Buddhist preparation for the Bodhisattva precepts in the formation process of three comprehensive precepts. Especially, we could observe various conflicts on the establishment of the basic perception of the three comprehensive precepts. The self ordination would probably be a good solution for the conflicts. Chungdam’s thought on the Buddhist precepts has still been preserved in the recent Korean Buddhism.
