The purpose of this study is to clarify the reason why songs are effective material for teaching pronunciation English prosody. For the purpose, 200 songs were analyzed to know how intonation, stress and rhythm are reflected in musical form.
In songs, pause or long notes are assigned at the boundary of a motive or a phrase, and this assignment reflects the boundary of the thought group with pause or final lengthening. That means songs are useful for learning to break up an utterance into thought groups for the right intonation. To find out the correspondence of the stressed/unstressed syllable with strong/weak position, the words of each position were classified into two groups, content words and function words. The result of analysis was that 86.61% of the corresponding stressed syllables of content words were in strong positions and 50.83% of corresponding unstressed syllables of function words were in weak positions. The reasons of unaccordance were ① the rhythm adjustment, ② the length adjustment by stress, ③ phrase boundary ④ comparison or emphasis, etc.
And the longer notes were assigned on the stressed syllables in comparison with the notes on the unstressed syllables respectively. That means songs keep the rhythm of English
