      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Conrad’s Lord Jim is a novel filled with paradoxes and oxymorons. They draw attention to the compellingly dual nature of the human experience, forcing the reader to confront two sides of reality. The paradoxes underscore the human predicament, prevent easy resolutions, and provoke sympathy and judgment, especially in Jim’s case. In revealing the dual nature of the human experience, these paradoxes often dilute the seriousness of the situation with humor as in the incongruous juxtaposition of courage with cowardice on board the Patna. A similar paradox also hangs over Jim’s conduct while on board the ship and his meditation on suicide in the lifeboat, which Marlow calls both tragic and funny. Even Stein’s famous but cryptic paradoxes are lightened by humor. They appear as well in the Patusan chapters, for Jim is both the conqueror and the conquered of the land and of Jewel, Jim’s beloved.
