초등학생의 영어 구사력과 강세박자의 상관관계 = The Relationship Between English Proficiency and Stress-timing in Korean Elementary School Students

국문 초록 (Abstract)

영어와 국어 발음의 대표적인 차이 중의 하나는 리듬이다. 발음상의 리듬이란 특정 요소가 규칙적으로 나타나는 것을 말하며, 영어는 강세 음절이 규칙적으로 나타나는 강세박자 언어이며 국 어는 모든 음절이 동일한 길이를 갖는 음절박자 언어이다. 본 논문에서는 초등학교 4학년 학생들을 대상으로 영어 구사력에 따른 강세박자의 경향을 음성분석 프로그램 프랏(praat)을 활용하여 문장 발화 시간과 모음의 길이 두 가지 측면으로 분석했다. 분석 결과, 상위 집단의 문장 발화 시간은 원어민 집단과 유사하게 강세박자 경향을 보였다. 반면에 하위 집단의 문장 발화 시간은 강세의 수보다는 음절의 수에 의해 결정되는 음절박자 경향을 보였다. 모음의 길이 측면에 있어 서도 상위 집단은 원어민 집단과 유사하게 성조활강에 의한 장모음화가 일어났지만, 하위 집단에 서는 장모음화가 일어나지 않았다. 본 논문의 이러한 결과는 초등영어교육 현장에서 강세박자와 관련된 발음 지도가 강조되어야 함을 시사한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

One of the most important differences in the phonology of English and Korean lies in the way they treat rhythm. English is well-known as a typical stress-timed language, where the number of stresses is the most important factor in determining the duration of sentences. In contrast, Korean is a syllable-timed language, where the number of syllables is the most important factor. Because of this important difference in rhythm, Korean learners of English have great difficulties acquiring fluency in speaking English. The goal of this paper is to investigate whether Korean elementary school students have a stress-timed rhythm or not in speaking English, depending on their levels of proficiency. It was found that the higher-level group showed a tendency toward stress-timing, whereas the lower-level group showed a tendency toward syllable-timing. The results of this study showed that there is a positive correlation between the level of learners`` proficiency and the degree of stress-timing and that more time and effort should be invested for the teaching of English rhythm in elementary school English in Korea.
