The works of the London and North Western Railway Company at Crewe consist principally of a rolling mill for the manufacture of permanent way rails, and engine works for the manufacture and repair of the locomotive stock of the line. The latter, first opened in the year 1843, have been extended from time to time to meet the requirements of the traffic, until, with the rolling mill, they now cover upward of seventeen acres of ground, not less than 30,000 square yards of this being taken up by covered or workshop area alone.
