The purpose of this research is to examine the interrelationship between the difference in the lengths of the two lower limbs and the balance of the upper limbs musculoskeletal system of the students majoring in hysical education and to provide basic data for more effective management of body for the students majoring in physical education.
In order to identify the pre-experimental characteristics of 34 students aged over 19 of M University located in Gyeonggi-do, the body forming test (Inbody 3.0) was conducted on them, and after analyzing the difference between the lengths of two lower limbs by TMM measurement, the subjects were divided into the group of less than 0.5cm and the group of 0.5cm or greater. And then video patterns were photographed and read by using Moire muscle somatotype tester and the interrelationship between the balance of the upper limbs musculoskeletal system and the difference in the lengths of the two lower limbs was examined. The results of the test are as follows.
First, there were significant differences in the lengths of two lower limbs in the bodily development conditions of the students. The results of TMM measurement showed that the length of right lower limb was 98.0cm on the average, and the length of left lower limb was 97.8cmm, with the right limb being longer on the average. The average difference in the lengths of the two lower limbs was found to be 0.55cm.
Second, the greater the difference in the lengths of two lower limbs, the higher negative (-) correlation with the balance of the upper limbs musculoskeletal system was found to be. This means that greater difference in the lengths of two lower limbs causes greater unbalance in the upper limbs musculoskeletal system.
Third, there were significant differences in the upper limbs musculoskeletal system between the group of less than 0.5cm and the group of 0.5cm or greater. The score of the balance of the upper limbs musculoskeletal system of the group of less than 0.5cm was average 70.36 which was higher than 50.26 of the group of 0.5cm or greater. This means that the balance of the upper limbs musculoskeletal system is caused in the group of 0.5cm or greater.
Fourth, the direction of the slope of shoulders depending on the direction of shorter lower limb side was examined as follows. When there was no difference in the lengths of the two legs without shorter lower limb side, the direction of shoulders was also parallel. The cases where the direction of shorter lower limb side was on the right side, the direction of the slope of shoulder was also on the right side accounted for 84.2%, which was higher than 10.5% of the cases of being on the left side. When the direction of shorter lower limb side was on the left side, the direction of the slope was all on the left side. This shows that the direction of shorter lower limb side is mostly the same as the direction of the slope.
Fifth, the cases where the back was high in the contour measurement depending on the direction of shorter lower limb side were examined as follows. When there was no difference in the lengths of the two legs without shorter lower limb side, the direction of the higher back was parallel and the cases where the direction of shorter lower limb side was on the right side, the higher direction of the back was on the right side accounted for 94.7% which was greater than 5.3% of the cases of being on the left side. The cases where the direction of shorter lower limb side was on the left side, and the higher direction of the back was on the left side accounted for 91.7% which was greater than 8.3% of the cases of being on the right side. This shows that the direction of shorter lower limb side and the direction of the higher back are mostly the same.
It can be seen from these results that the difference in the lengths of two lower limbs causes the unbalance in the upper limbs musculoskeletal system. When such bodily unbalance continues to exist, a lot of diseases such as back pain, scoliosis and lordosis of the lumbar, and lumbago can be caused. So, it is deemed necessary to make further researches on the correction exercise programs to correct the balance between the difference in the lengths of two lower limbs and the upper limbs musculoskeletal system and on the effects of the programs.
