뮤지컬 레미제라블의 I Dreamed a Dream과 On My Own 매쉬업을 통한 음악적·서사적 특징 분석

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 뮤지컬 레미제라블의 대표곡 I Dreamed a Dream과 On My Own의 매쉬업(Mash-up) 기법을 중심으로, 두 곡이 결합하여 형성하는 음악적·서사적 특징을 분석하고 그 예술적 가치를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 각 곡이 독립적으로 지닌 서사와 정서적 흐름이 매쉬업을 통해 어떻게 통합되고 확장되는지를 탐구하여, 청자에게 복합적이고 다층적인 음악적 경험을 제공하는지 살펴보았다. 연구 결과, 두 곡의 선율적 정점과 화성적 긴장 해소가 매쉬업의 구성에서 정서적 고조와 해소를 효과적으로 표현하며, 이 과정에서 서로 다른 서사적 흐름이 하나의 통합된 서사로 재구성되었음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 매쉬업 기법은 곡의 정서적 전환을 극대화하여 청중의 몰입을 높이는 중요한 창작 전략으로 작용하였다. 본 연구는 매쉬업이 단순한 음악적 결합을 넘어 기존 작품의 의미를 재해석하고 예술적 가치를 확장시키는 효과적인 수단임을 시사하며, 향후 다양한 뮤지컬 작품에 대한 매쉬업 연구가 지속되기를 기대한다.

This study aims to analyze the musical and narrative characteristics of the mash-up technique applied to the representative songs I Dreamed a Dream and On My Own from the musical Les Misérables and to explore its artistic value. By examining how the independent narratives and emotional flows of each song are integrated and expanded through the mash-up, the study investigates whether the combined piece offers listeners a complex and multi-layered musical experience. The findings indicate that the melodic peaks and harmonic resolutions of the two songs effectively express emotional buildup and release within the mash-up structure, thereby transforming the distinct narrative flows into a unified storyline. Additionally, the mash-up technique enhances emotional transitions, serving as a critical creative strategy that deepens audience engagement. This study suggests that mash-ups are not merely a combination of songs but a meaningful tool for reinterpreting existing works and expanding their artistic value. It also hopes to encourage future research on the use of mash-up techniques in various musical theater compositions.
