Background: With the enactment of the basic ordinance for youth by local governments, youth spaces began to be created. With the establishment of the Youth Center, the youth space, which was initially specialized in the field of employment, has expanded its scope to various fields. However, it is unclear whether it plays a sufficient role. Accordingly, it is necessary to collect opinions from users and workers to explore the factors influencing the role of the youth center and establish future development directions.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to provide essential data regarding the direction of youth center management in response to this need. To achieve this, we aim to comprehensively understand the role of the youth center from various perspectives, primarily focusing on the perceptions of young people and the center workers who are the users of these facilities.
Methodology: To achieve this goal the study selected 10 young people who use youth centers to conduct a Concept Mapping method, generating ideas about the factors that contribute to the role of youth centers and to classify them according to their similarity. Subsequently, in order to survey the importance of statements afterwards, a survey was conducted on 106 young people with experience in utilizing facilities. Additionally, 5 center workers were selected for a focus group interview(FGI) as research participants.
Findings: As a result, 55 statements were confirmed and the content was classified by the research participants into two dimensions and four clusters. Upon closer examination, the clusters were composed of “orientation of space,” “diverse content acquisition,” “regional-based youth support system,” and “enhanced promotion of youth centers.” Based on the result of the analysis, an FGI was conductd with five youth center workers as subjects to confirm their perceptions of the statements, evaluate the youth centers, and suggest future directions. As a result, the workers confirmed the need for more promotional staff, diversified programs, and a spatial meaning of youth centers.
Conclusions: This study sought future development directions through the perception of young people using youth centers. It is also meaningful that facility workers were able to confirm young people’s perceptions and workers’ views of the center, and finally, they used conceptual research methods to confirm young people’s perceptions.
