Music in North Korea has its significance greater than mere a genre of art. Since the nation’s division, North Korea took adv antage of music to be a political means intended to effectively e mphasize and disseminate the Chuche idea, and developed the m usic in the name of so-called “Chuche music.” In particular, Kim Chong-il’s ruling era is called as the time of “music politics” a nd the Chuche music is the result of utilization of music for the people, who suffered severe hardships of life, to foster a bright hope for the future. Besides, as vocal music in North Korea can disseminate ideas through the words, it is considered more impor tant than instrumental music, and North Korea independently dev eloped vocalization technique that accords to Chuche-music.In recent years, we came to have easy access to songs and pe rformances by North Korean musicians through the mass media. In other words, we can now directly witness the North Korean people’s actual life and listen to the musicians’ performances, w hich we could only see indirectly in the past through special pro grams compiled by a certain television station with participation of North Korean defectors. The songs sung by North Korean sin gers from various different regions and performance groups lead us to easily recognize them as being North Korean singers thro ugh their unique vocalism without the explanation that they are “the singers from North Korea.” Furthermore, even musical instr ument players show characteristic features which are seen in vo calists. The present writer, who majored in the western music and we stern-style vocalization and teaches and performs them, has a gr eat interest in North Korea’s vocalization technique that shows u niqueness while retaining similarity to western-style vocalism. H ow can we explain about the uniqueness that leads one to sense it is the North Korean style even by the first access? The qu estion about practical differences taking place between western a nd North Korean vocalization while showing similarity to each ot her, and my interests in some other aspects, are the motives of this thesis. This thesis is the result of research as to how unique isthe N o r t h K o r e a n v o c a l i z a t i o n . the music that came into the world under a peculiar political situ a t i o n i n No r t h Ko r e a a f t e r t h e n a t i o n ’ s d i v i s i o n . and as to the reason why such situation has developed. As concrete research means, this thesis is intended to examine what i s North Korean-style vocalization claimed by North Korea; the c ause of its origination, and how it has developed after its birth. At the same time, this thesis also aims to review the nature of changes in vocalization, if any taking place during the short peri od of time after its origination, based on the screen image mater ials concerning actual performances that became easily accessibl in recent years.
