      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Wan Seo Park was recognized as a writer at age forty and wrote more than one hundred novels and short stories in thirty years. She also wrote ten collections of essays, beginning with her first collection, "Cheers to the Last".
While the novel suggests or implies a world of vision, describing themes which are supposed to be, it can be said that an essay is written through remembrance, reflection, and the contemplation of certain objects of our daily life as personalized by philosophic view, penetration and deep understanding.
She says in the preface of a collection of essays that "I have two desires which I want to describe by novels and essays. I have paid attention to these two desires equally to write my literary works". We can read her mind in these comments that she tried to describe her literary works by her essays, different from her novels. What was her intetion trying to show her mind in her essays and devoting herself to write her essays?
One characteristic in her novels is the theme of war and the partition of the Korean peninsula. But She does not mention the war and the partition in her essays. The issues are different from the novels, more open-hearted and real.
There are diversified themes in her essays but we can pick two characteristics out of them.
One is "Beauty of Contemplation and Self-reflection" which she saw and felt from her daily life, and the other one is " The Critical Terms from her Real Life". Her themes in her essays are what happens on bus, articles of newspapers, a lady passing by when she looks down from the veranda or replacing the pot soil-an image from normal daily life.
The themes of her essays are especially based on her personal life experiences. Her essays begin with her way of life with a common event or thing she confronted in daily life. The most common theme of her essays is her youth, longing for it in her consciousness. Some essays are remembrance of her youth and her happiness from that time and the criticism of reality is based on her personal life experiences and touches the readers a lot.
In her essay "A Playground of Youth" she describes the customs of her hometown "Gaesung" like a detailed landscape. It is a means of a historical datum for her hometown. "The Finding of Happiness in her Daily Life" in her essays is a longing for a return to nature, otherwise even though living in the inner city. It brings happiness to us that we could not find in daily life. In her essay "Self-reflection of the Aged" she tells the feelings of humanity based on love and understanding under the beauty of contemplation.
The recognition of reality in her essay "Critical Terms in Reality" diversifies but she writes clearly about it as a woman. The critical consciousness in her essays is not stronger than it was in her novels, but it seems that this is mostly from her daily life. Her social criticism of real consciousness engages with that of women's problem and those two themes arise simultaneously.
Her themes are sometimes inattentive and desultory. Sometimes she reinterates with a few themes in some works and a unity of the work is indicated on the whole. One of her weaknesses is that she repeats the same stories in her other literary works. The themes are mostly ambiguous in her recent essay collection "Bean Curd". The things may happen because of her old age, but her literary styles look better and offset her weakness. When we read her essays, we sometimes forget the theme because of her fluent literary style. In a word, her essays are written by her pen, not by her intention. When we read the masterpieces of her essays, we recognize the flying time and our emotion is touched and pleased.
Even though she wrote many masterpieces of the novel, her essays are ambiguous in penetrating her sincere and serious life rather than in her novels. There are many theses about her novels, but only a few about her essays.
Accordingly, I want to understand the aspect of her literary works by analyzing the themes of her essays and devote myself to Korean modern literary essays by examining diversified aspects of her essays that make a range of her literature in my thesis "A Study of Essays written Wan Seo Park".
