『책과 노니는 집』에 나타난 인본주의 사상 연구 = A Study on Modern Humanistic Thoughts Observed in The House for Strolling with Books

국문 초록 (Abstract)

어린이는 역사 이야기와 관련이 깊다. 어린이 문학의 걸작은 역사물과 시대물 에서 탄생하곤 했다. 본고에서 다룬『책과 노니는 집』은 조선 시대 영, 정조 시대 에 집집마다 방문하면서 책을 판매하던 ‘조생’이라는 실존 인물을 토대로 한 역사 동화이다. 천주교를 박해하던 근대, 우리나라의 격동기를 토대로 한 작품이다. ‘모 든 사람은 평등하다’라는 사상을 기반으로 한 『책과 노니는 집』은 인본주의 사상을 기반으로 한다. 작가 이영서는 장이라는 어린 아이의 눈을 통해 19세기 조선 후기의 근대 체험과 인간 해방의 정신을 이끌어 내고 있다. 이 작품은 조선 후기 필사쟁이의 삶을 살아갔던 아버지와 아들의 이야기로, 실존하는 역사적 인물을 토 대로 한 역사소설로 역사성과 허구성을 조화롭게 완성시킨 성장 소설이다. 또한 책을 다루는 일을 직업으로 했던 역사적 인물을 토대로 우리 근대사에서 책이 삶 인 사람들, 책을 다루는 사람들의 이야기를 기록하고 있다. 본고가 이 작품에 주목 하는 이유는 이 작품이 조선 후기 근대 인본주의 사상에 입각하여 계몽, 계급, 공 간, 언어, 종교, 인간이라는 주제에 새로운 지평을 열었기 때문이다. 요컨대 지식의 보편화, 인쇄 기술의 발전과 책방의 확산, 신분 제도의 위기와 평등사상의 출현, 서울(한양)이라는 도시 공간의 정착과 근대적 순환과정, 새로운 언어의 출현으로서 이야기의 대중화, 그리고 천주교의 출현으로 전근대적 금기와 근대적 도전 의식의 성숙 등이 새로운 인간 삶의 전망을 제시해 주고 있다. 요컨대 우리의 역사를 어린 필사쟁이의 시점으로 재현하되, 조선 후기 시민계급의 출현과 서양 종교의 유 입으로 근대적 인본주의 인간상의 출현을 보이고 있다. 이 작품은 그 동안 어린이 문학이 소홀히 했던 역사 이야기를 심도 깊게 다루어 한국 어린이 문학 장르의 수준을 진일보 한 점에서 의의가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Children are closely associated with historical stories. Masterpieces of children`s literature have often been born among works related to history or specific ages. The House for Strolling with Books covered in this study is historical literature based on a real person named ‘Jo?saeng’ who peddled books during the days of Kings Yeongjo and Jeongjo in the Chosun Dynasty. This work was written during the modern times when Korea was going through violent changes including the persecution of Catholicism. The House for Strolling with Books, which represents the thought ‘Everybody is equal’, is based on humanistic ideas. The writer Lee Yeong?seo draws out modern experiences and the spirit of human freedom in the late 19th century of Korea through a young child`s eyes. This is a story about a father and his son who are calligraphers in the late Chosun Dynasty. It is an historical novel based on a real person`s life and, at the same time, an initiation story that harmonize historicity and fictitiousness. Moreover, based on historical figures who worked on books, it records stories about people to whom books were their life and those who dealt with books in our modern history. The reason for this study to pay attention to this work is that it opened a new horizon on themes such as enlightenment, class, space, language, religion and human based on modern humanistic thoughts in the late Chosun Dynasty. In brief, it presents a new prospects of human life such as the universality of knowledge, the development of printing technologies, the spread of book stores, the crisis of the class system and the emergence of equalitarianism, the settlement and modern cyclic process of Seoul(Hanyang) as a urban space, the popularization of stories with the emergence of new languages, and the maturity of premodern taboos and modern challenging spirits resulting from the introduction of Catholicism. In conclusion, this story reproduces our history from a young calligrapher`s eye and shows the emergence of bourgeoisie and modern humanistic images of people caused by the import of the Western religion in the late Chosun Dynasty. This work is meaningful in that it dealt seriously with historical stories, which had been relatively neglected in children`s literature, and thus upgraded the level of children`s literature in Korea.
