ALTHOUGH Captain Ogilvie found himself obliged to surrender Dunnottar, he determined, if possible, to preserve the Honours from falling into the hands of the English. But the difficulty was, how to get them removed to a place of safety, when the castle was so closely besieged, that scarcely a mouse could escape without being seen; and hiding them inside the castle would be worse than useless, for they were almost sure to be found. Besides, he had no security but that the castle might be burnt, when his precious charge would be irretrievably lost.
