When Kim Baekmoon, founder of Israel Monastery, died in December 1990, his disciples at first seemed to be united with each other. But that visible peace among them was not actually genuine one and so could not last long. As soon as one of them, named Elder Shin, declared himself to be Kim`s only successor, distrust and hostility against him became quite visible. Such an internal disunity came finally to break the community into several pieces in 1996. In 2002, when the present writer visited Israel Monastery, there were only 5 disciples still keeping their religious identity as students of Kim Baekmoon, but they were no longer forming any congregation of their own at all. That is, there were no public gatherings at all in Israel Monastery. They did not even gather together on their traditional holy days such as January 3rd. March 2nd, and so on, while each of them was privately keeping his/her faith. But this was not the end of their story. Elder Shin had been opening an internet homepage for missionary purpose. It remains to be seen whether his internet activity would lead to a new age for Israel Monastery.
