소크라테스의 ‘정의(定義) 우선성’의 도덕교육적 의미 -『라케스』와 『메논』을 중심으로 - = The Moral Educational Significance of the Socratic Priority of Definitions -The Concepts of Plato’s Laches and Meno~

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 소크라테스의 ‘정의(定義)우선성’을 탐구한 것이다. 플라톤의 대화편에서 보이는 소크라테스는 ‘X란 무엇인가?’라는 정의에 관한 질문을 자신의 대화상대자들에게 끊임없이 제기한다. 이에 본 연구에서는 정의의 질문에 사로잡혀 있는 소크라테스의 특징을 살펴보고, 그것의 도덕교육적 의미를 탐구하였다. 무엇인가의 정의를 요구하는 소크라테스의 물음은, 논의하려는 단어나 개념들에 관한 합의 과정이며 대상의 본질이나 목적 등에 관한 앎의 문제로 연결된다. 또한 대화상대자의 무지를 이끌어 대화와 탐구에 참여시키기 위한 전략으로 활용된다. ‘정의 우선성’을 통해, 정의의 질문은 어떤 대상의 올바른 인지를 위한 기준일 뿐만 아니라, 그것을 가르칠 수 있는 전문적인 역량을 판단하는 기준으로 활용된다. 또한 도덕교육에서 ‘앎’이 실제적고 본질적인 수준이어야 가르쳐질 수 있으며, 도덕적 지식에 대한 탐구는 본래 지니고 있는 의견들을 상기함으로써 가능할 수 있다. 결국, ‘X란 무엇인가?’라는 물음은 인지적 수준에서 머무는 것이 아닌, 방법론적인 실천으로 이해될 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper investigates Socratic priority of definitions. In Plato' dialogue, Socrates constantly raises questions about the definition of ‘what is X?’ to his interlocutors. In this study, it is examined the characteristics of Socrates, who was preoccupied with question of definitions, and is explored its moral educational meaning.
The question of Socrates, which requires a definition of something is an agreement on the words or concepts to be discussed, and leads to a question of knowledge about the nature or purpose of the subject. It is also used as a strategy to engage in conversation and inquiry by reminding the ignorance of his interlocutors.
Through the priority of definition, question of definitions is used not only as a criterion for the correct recognition of a subject, but as a basis for determining the professional ability to teach it. In addition, 'knowledge’ in moral education can be taught at a practical and essential level, and the quest for moral knowledge can be made by recollecting the opinions that it has. After all, the question ‘what is X’ can be understood as a methodological practice, not as staying at a cognitive level.
