외국인 투자가 기업성과에 미치는 영향: 제주 숙박업체를 중심으로 = The Impact of Foreign Investment on Corporate Performance: Focusing on Jeju Lodging Companies

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 외국인 투자와 제주 숙박업체 기업성과의 관계를 규명하는 것이다. 제주도는 부동산 투자를 비롯해 외국인 투자가 많이 이루어지는 곳이다. 관광 산업은 제주도 경제를 떠받치는 핵심 산업 중 하나이다. 이러한 제주 숙박업체에 있어 외국인 투자의 역할을 연구하는 것은 의미 있는 작업이다. 제주도라는 특수한 지리적 환경에서 외국인 투자로 인한 효과는 다른 지역들과 차별화될 수 있으며 이에 관한 연구가 필요하다. 이를 조사하기 위해, 2000년부터 2023년까지 제주 소재 외감법인 숙박업체를 대상으로 연구한다. 연구결과, 외국인 투자는 제주 숙박업체 기업성과에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 매출액, 매출총이익률, 매출액영업이익률, 매출액순이익률로 측정한 모든 기업성과에 일관되게 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는, 외국인 투자자가 제주 숙박업체의 감시와 견제 등 긍정적인 역할보다는 침략 자본으로써 부정적인 역할에 머문 것으로 판단된다. 본 연구는 그동안 이루어지지 않았던 외국인의 제주 투자에 관해 연구했다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 외국인 투자가 제주 숙박업체의 기업성과에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구는 제주도 관광 산업 발전과 정책 수립에 중요한 시사점을 제공할 수 있을 것이다. 제주특별자치도 지방정부, 제주특별자치도개발공사(JPDC), 제주국제자유도시개발센터(JDC) 등 관계 기관의 외국인 투자 정책 의사결정에 도움이 되길 바란다.

This study aims to examine the relationship between foreign investment and corporate performance of Jeju lodging companies. Jeju is a place where a lot of foreign investment is made, including real estate investment. The tourism industry is one of the key industries supporting the economy of Jeju. It is meaningful work to study the role of foreign investment in Jeju lodging companies. The effects of foreign investment in Jeju Island’s special geographical environment may be different from those in other regions, and research on this is necessary. To investigate this, the study will be conducted on lodging companies in Jeju from 2000 to 2023. The study results showed that foreign investment had a negative impact on the corporate performance of Jeju lodging companies. It was found to have a consistently negative impact on all corporate performances measured by sales, gross profit margin (gross profit to sales), operating profit margin (operating income to sales), and net profit margin (net income to sales). These results suggest that foreign investors played a negative role as invasive capital rather than a positive role in monitoring and controlling Jeju lodging companies. This study is significant in that it studies foreign investment in Jeju, which has not been conducted before. A study on the impact of foreign investment on the corporate performance of Jeju lodging companies could provide important implications for the development of Jeju tourism industry and policy making. It is hoped that it will be helpful in foreign investment policy decision-making by related organizations such as the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province local government, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Development Corporation (JPDC), and Jeju Free International City Development Center (JDC).
